THE ORGANIZATION OF THE CHASE COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

On November 8, 1949, a group of people met for the purpose of planning a reunion of the graduates of the classes of 1928, 1929, and 1930 of Chase County High School. It was at this meeting that the idea of organizing an Alumni Association was born. Those first organizers were Opal Benson Kilpatrick, Eva Surber Baldwin, Edith Baldwin Minick, Edgar Hatheway, George Moreland, and Perry Baldwin. One member of each class, 1916 through 1949 was invited to a meeting at the High School on November 28, 1949. Sixty-five persons were present. Officers were elected, a constitution and by-laws proposed and a directory planned.

The first social gathering was held June 25, 1950, with 500 people in attendance. For the first several years the event was an informal noon-time "covered-dish" dinner or picnic. In 1955, the classes of 1925, 1935, and 1945 were given special recognition. On April 29, 1956, a Silver Anniversary tea was co-sponsored by the Alumni Association and the CCHS music department, at which Mr. Paul Chambers, a former music teacher, was honored. In the early years the association held card parties and dances, as social events for fund-raising purposes and several times sponsored the "Homecoming Dance" in October.

Since 1955, the banquet theme has prevailed as the preferred means of assembling the visiting and local "old grads". It is usually held in late May and each year the classes celebrating a 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, and since 1976, a 60th anniversary are honored and a special effort is made to gather as many as possible to renew old acquaintances.

Originally, dues of one dollar per person was assessed for membership in the association. Recently this was abandoned as impractical when collection became difficult. At the present time, the Association's only income is from the sale of tickets to the annual banquet, the charge per plate being a little more than the actual cost.

The only pre-requisite for membership in the Association is having been graduated from Chase County High School at any time from 1916 to the present. Graduates of the earlier Imperial High School 1895 through 1915 are honorary members, as are former faculty members. Each regular member is privileged to invite his or her wife, husband, girl-friend, or boy-friend, as the case may be to the social event, provided a ticket is purchased for the guest.

Executive officers are the present, three vice-presidents, a treasurer, and a secretary. They are chosen from among the directors and are elected by them. The Board of Directors consists of one representative from each year's class; these were originally appointed by the president to serve a minimum of two years. Any director may resign at the end of his term by obtaining a local classmate as his replacement. Meetings are called at the discretion of the president. Association business is conducted and activities are planned by the officers and directors who attend these meetings.

The original directory was published in 1950. An up-dated version was printed in 1960 and another in 1966 in celebration of the school's 50th anniversary. A supplement is prepared each year, naming the officers and directors for the coming year, and lisitng the names and addresses of the members of the graduating class for the current year.

Edith Baldwin Minick ('28) prepared and kept a scrapbook of interesting letters, programs, clippings, and data concerning the annual banquets. Since she moved to Oklahoma, this scrapbook is kept by Burneta Bremer Pflum ('34) and is on display at the annual banquets. Many class groups compile interesting scrapbooks during their honor year festivities, which are also on display at the banquet. Formal programs are kept to a minimum at these gatherings, to allow time for visiting with old friends.
