How Do I Download?

Do this once: Create a temporary directory on your hard drive.

  1. For Windows 95 users go to Start|Programs|Windows Explorer.
  2. Place your cursor on the C:. This may have the name of your hard drive next to it.
  3. While the C: is highlighted go up to Files|New|Folder. This will create a folder on the right side of the screen called NewFolder.
  4. Give it a new name. I suggest something starting with the letter "a", like aapples. I know I spelled it with two a's. This will keep it at the top of the directory list and easy to find. You have just created a directory.
  5. I suggest you create a couple of them and use these to store files that you download from the net.

Do this everytime:

  1. Find the file that you want to download from the internet. Click on it.
  2. You will get a Save As window asking you if you want to save this to disk if you are using IE3 or simply a window in N3.
  3. Navigate to the directory you want to save this to. I suggest aaples or whatever directory you are using for temporary storage.
  4. The file will be transferred to your hard drive. This may take a considerable amount of time depending on the size of the file.
  5. Once it is done downloading then you may find it in your temporary directory using windows explorer or file manager.
  6. You can make it easier to clear up your hard drive later if you decide you don't like a file if you go to the control panel then add/remove programs and install from this point. If at some later time you want to remove the file, then return here and you can remove the program and all of its files regardless of directory.
  7. Note: If it is a .zip file then you will need an unzipping program. You can find the one I recommend off the Chase 3000 homepage, recommend icon. You can download it and it will expand itself if you just double click on it. If it is an .exe program then you can just double click on it and it will open itself up.
